AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AND INTERDEPARTMENTAL PROGRAM AT COLUMBIA

Joe Sheppard

Joe Sheppard graduated from the Classical Studies PhD program in spring 2019 with a dissertation entitled Mass Spectacles in Roman Pompeii as a System of Communication (advisor and chair: Francesco de Angelis). In the 2019-20 academic year he held the position of Term Assistant Professor at Barnard College, where he taught Latin at all levels in addition to seminars on history and the classical tradition. From Fall 2020, he is a joint postdoctoral teaching fellow in Classics and Art History and Archaeology at Washington University in St. Louis.

Joe is also Assistant Field Director for the excavations at the Villa Adriana near Tivoli, Italy, undertaken by the Advanced Program in Ancient History and Art (Columbia University and L'Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza"). In addition to publishing antiquities held by collections in the US, Joe is currently working on the historiography of intercity rivalries in Roman Italy and material religion in the Vesuvian cities.
