AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AND INTERDEPARTMENTAL PROGRAM AT COLUMBIA

Evan Jewell Awarded Mellon International Travel Fellowship

What's Happening

One of twenty-two fellows, Evan will use the Mellon International Travel Fellowship (sponsored by Columbia GSAS) to pursue research in museum collections and at archaeological sites, primarily in Italy, but also in other parts of Europe, for the 2018-19 academic year. This research will inform the final stages of the writing of his dissertation, which offers a new history of elite male youth from the Middle Republic to the Neronian age. In particular, since his dissertation project has a strong multi-media component, he hopes to examine a number of Roman portraits for understudied features relating to youth (e.g. beards), as well as epigraphic and numismatic collections. Based in Rome and affiliated with La Sapienza University, besides making use of the abundance of resources and collections in the city, he also aims to participate in workshops and conferences in the region.
