In addition to the requirements listed below, all students must submit one official transcript showing courses and grades per school attended, a Statement of Academic Purpose, a personal statement, a writing sample (course paper, term paper, etc.) and 3 letters of evaluation from academic sources. All international students whose native language is not English, or whose undergraduate degree is from an institution in a country whose official language is not English, must submit scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS. Applicants should have a reading knowledge of Greek and Latin and one modern language (German, French, or Italian); some undergraduate work in classical literature, philosophy, art, or history is desirable. Students interested in taking the Free-Standing M.A. option may be considered for admittance with a background in only one of the ancient languages. Students without an M.A. degree are admitted only for the program beginning in the autumn term. Under special circumstances, students with an M.A. degree from Columbia or another institution may enter in the spring.
