AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AND INTERDEPARTMENTAL PROGRAM AT COLUMBIA

Olcott Collection at Columbia University

In the Spring of 2012, Columbia’s Low Library housed an exhibition on Roman Art, curated and designed by Professors Francesco de Angelis, Marco Maiuro, and their students: “Archaeology and the City: The Olcott Collection, from Rome to Columbia.” The exhibition was accompanied by a conference on “Archaeology and the City: A Conference on Ancient Rome in New York”, sponsored by the Department of Art History and the Center for the Ancient Mediterranean.

Many students from Columbia’s Classical Studies M.A. and Ph.D. Program participated in the exhibition project, together with Ph.D. students from Art History and History, Classics’ Postbaccalaureat program, Columbia College and Columbia’s School of General Studies, the graduate program of Columbia’s School of Architecture, and NYU’s IFA Ph.D. program. These are images of some of the stunning objects before they went on display, and of some of the students at work, with Professor Katja Vogt visiting.
